Beckham to earn a knighthood?

Rumours have been spreading around Whitehall that former England captain, David Beckham, could be about to become knighted in Queen Elizabeth's New Year's honours list. If the 31 year old former England star does get knighted, it would mean his wife, Victoria, will be known as Lady Victoria, and the man himself will be known as Sir David Beckham.

Beckham faces a prestigious knighthood in honour of his services to the community and to soccer. One source at Westminster said last night: "It is just something which clearly makes sense. Beckham contributed a huge amount to the successful London Olympic bid and has become the enduring sporting icon of this generation."

Beckham is already the proud owner of an OBE (Order of the British Empire) which he was awarded in 2003.

If Beckham were to recieve the award, it would cement his place in history alongside some of the greatest English footballers ever, such as Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Geoff Hurst and Sir Bobby Moore.

It is widely thought that the current Prime Minister, Tony Blair, is the one who will recommend Beckham for the honour on the New Year's honour list, in an attempt to be remembered as a populist Prime Minister. New Labour's spin doctors are apparently keen to see Beckham rewarded for his endeavours over the years, and think that such an award will make their party more popular with the electorate.

On the football side of matters, Beckham remains confident that he will still be able to claw his way into Steve McClaren's England team. The midfielder said: "It’s hard to watch England without being in the team. It’s still hard and it will be until I’m back in there." Beckham has also been out of favour at club level. He hasn't been a regular starter with Real Madrid, and there has been much speculation over his future.
