World Club Challenge 2007 - St Helens v Brisbane Broncos 23/02/07

This game saw the best team in the English Super League take on the best team in the Australian NRL. Both teams had been 2006 Grand Final winners so it was set to be a great match.

With 5 minutes gone, Corey Parker went over the try line for the Broncos after a mistake from Ade Gardiner. Parker also converted the try.

Saints where frustrated and gave away many needless penalties. Parker converted a penalty kick to make it 8-0 after 15 minutes.

On the 20 minute mark, Paul Sculthorpe made his comeback for Saints after injury. This seemed to lift the players who pressurised Brisbane into making mistakes.

Both sides held each other off and muscled up in defense to stop each other from scoring.

Brisbane seemed to need a breather on the 30 minute mark as they tried to slow the game down.

Both teams held strong and on the stroke of half time, Ade Gardner went over the try line for St Helens. Sculthorpe converted the try and the half time score was 6-8.

2 minutes into the second half saw Darius Boyd dive over the try line for the Broncos after a dubious forward pass a few plays before.

Parker failed to convert the try.

The Broncos then gave away silly penalties and Saints attacked their try line. They had acres of space for a certain try but Leon Pryce knocked on.

Saints dug in deep and Sculthorpe marked his return to action with a try. He also converted the try to level the scores at 12-12.

Both sides then made handling errors as they got a bit reckless with their passes.

A silly penalty given away by St Helens saw Parker convert from 30 metres out.

The tide then turned in Saints favour as a superb high kick from Sean Long was caught in the air by Gardner who dived over the try line. Sculthorpe converted the try.

The last 10 minutes was fraught and tense but St Helens held on to win.

Paul Sculthorpe, the St Helens Captain, was named Man of the Match.

The final score was 18-14.
