Geraldine McEwan in Miss Marple - series 3 - At Bertram's Hotel

The first of four episodes from series three of Miss Marple starring Geraldine McEwan premières on ITV1 on Sunday evening.

The other Agatha Christie novels in series three include Nemesis, Towards Zero and Ordeal by Innocence. The latter two novels did not feature Miss Marple and she has presumably been written into the TV series to spin out the opportunities to use the Miss Marple character.

The plot for Bertram's Hotel has been adapted to ITV's ideas of 21st century values in the Britain in the 1950s. The absent-minded Canon Pennyfather has become a Nazi war criminal masquerading as an Anglican priest. The quiet Bertram's Hotel has an American jazz band playing to guests.

There is a camp gay man in make-up and a hotel chambermaid played by Martine McCutcheon who helps in the investigation. When Miss Marple asks if she and the chief inspector are going to get married after discovering their romance, the maid says, "Oh no, we're just going to live together. That's how it's done these days." Miss Marple replies: "That's not what I would have done at your age, but I probably would now."

Geraldine McEwan is joined in the cast by Isabella Parriss, Mark Heap, Martine McCutcheon, Francesca Annis and Ed Stoppard.
