Fort Widley

Last night I was on a ghost investigation at Fort Widley in Portsmouth.

I had no idea where I was due to investigate other than we were all to gather at a meeting point at a specific time. I knew it wouldn't be Wymering Manor as that was being investigated by another group and I thought it could be one of the forts but wasn't sure which one. Once at the meeting point, we got told where we were going and then drove onto the location. I was really looking forward to this as it has been somewhere I have wanted to investigate.

We arrived at the location at 8pm and after bring our equipment in, and getting sorted, we were taken on a guided tour of the location. The tunnels were split into North, East, South and West and some looked deceptively longer than others. On the way back, we were passing the spiral staircase looking down the entrance to the East tunnels when I heard what I thought were footsteps behind me. I could account for all the investigators as they were all in front of me; I immediately switched torch on and turned round to look down the tunnel but nobody was there. We then made our way back to the base room to sort out the groups for the night.

The first vigils started around 10pm and were split into two groups; the first group which I was in was down in the East Tunnel, the other group were in the North tunnel. We made our way down the long tunnel where we started our vigil. One investigator picked up a man who could be quite unpleasant at times. He also makes his presence known by touching people, in particular women or by a smell of smoke. At the end of the tunnel was a small 'room'; we went in and I was immediately drawn to the upstairs doorway. I had visions of man standing up there looking at us with his hands on the railings.
We had been in there a while and I started to get a scent; quite strong and musty and felt bit nauseous so I quickly left the area to get my bearings. After a few minutes, went back in again but we were hearing various noises from outside the door so we all went back outside. We sat in silence for a little while before calling out. We thought we heard the sound of 'scraping' above us; a couple of investigators thought they heard the sound of a little girl. We also saw some balls of white light; there was one flash of light which we put down to cameras as the other team were on their way back.

After the break, we continued our vigils again; my team went to the West tunnels and the other team went to the East tunnel. The West tunnel was, in truth, fairly quiet although a couple of members did pick up on a couple of things. Again, after an hour's vigil, we made our way back to the base room for a break.

It was then decided that the teams would be split into teams of two; Rob and I were sent down to the Hay Room (along with one of our hosts, Jennifer). We completed evp and took various photos but the room was generally very quiet and no activity to report. After 30 mins, we made our way back and joined a couple of other investigators as they were apparently picking up some activity in the Horse and Saddle rooms.

After a short break, Rob and I were sent down to the West tunnels again for 30 minute vigils. Again, after completing some evp and taking photos, we made our way back. The tunnel was very quiet and flat; if there had been any activity that evening, it was no longer there now.

We finished our investigation around 4am; all in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable location and a place I would like to go back and investigate again.
