Super League XIII - The 2008 season summed up

Well, it is the end of another Super League season and 2008 proved to be an exciting one!

The winners of the League Table were St Helens, who came back from a few defeats that they didn't need, to overcome Leeds Rhinos to take the title.

Castleford Tigers finished bottom of the lead but have avoided relegation as the 2009 Super League season keeps all the 12 original teams in with two more added from National League One to make the numbers up to 14, with no promotion or relegation anymore. Teams have to submit a plan to the RFL (Rugby Football League) and it is they who choose who stays in Super League.

Six teams from National League One submitted bids to get into Super League. They were Widnes Vikings, Halifax, Leigh Centurians, Salford City Reds, Celtic Crusaders and Whitehaven. Only two teams could be accepted and the lucky ones were Salford City Reds, who were relegated from Super League in 2007, and Celtic Crusaders who are a newly formed club from Bridgend in Wales.

Many were suprised that the Welsh club had been given the green light over many longer standing clubs but I personally think this was a decision by the RFL to give Welsh rugby league a go. Rightly or wrongly, the decision has now been made.

WELL DONE to St Helens who thouroughly deserved to win after a great last half of the season.
