A late flourish from Australia led them to their first ever victory in a World Cup Finals tournament. All three goals came from substitutes, with Everton midfielder Tim Cahill scoring two, and John Aloisi scoring the other in injury time. Japan had gone ahead in the 26th minute through a contraversial free kick, scored by Shunsuke Nakamura.
