Hi guys! It’s Kaneko! Today’s main ingredient is this! Mysterious box Alright, let’s start cleaning! [Cooking Starts!] Alright, so here is today’s main ingredient Electric eel I’m going to tell you all first, I will be doing something dangerous in this video Even if you receive a fresh electric eel, please do not attempt doing the same
[We’ll never get one] I’m doing this on my own responsibility But according to my research, electric eels are edible In the Amazon, people say eating electric eels are good for your health Which is perfect for unhealthy me So I’m gonna eat it Alrighty, let’s open this box! First, we gotta cut the string There There it is Electric eel in water delivers more powerful shock And less electric shock when it’s out of water So this is still in water and that when we really gotta be careful with Should be safe after wearing rubber gloves Excuse me sir Eh?! This is quite big…. I thought maybe two eels in the box? But no, it was one huge eel There’s a hot pack They sent with a hot pack because electric eels live in warm water Woowww Eh eh eh eh Wait a minute, this is extremely huge! Oh wait, water is leaking Not good, this is bad, oh gosh…. I didn’t think this styrofoam box had holes
Oh no no no no no
[*Styrofoam box had holes] This is bad Uh oh this is a disaster Emergency here!! I lined the floor with a plastic mat just in case and I’m glad I did that But seriously…. I didn’t think the box would have holes… Electric eel water…
[Dripping electric eel water in my room] Started off on the wrong foot…. It’s extremely big!! Head is about the size of my fist Let’s observe closely on the cutting board later Ahh!!! Can you see the body twitching? I think it’s generating electricity [Let’s do an experiment] I don’t think it’ll charge but let’s give it a try But wow, I’m trying to clean an electric eel at 8 AM… Ready? Of course, it won’t charge… But I feel it’s generating electricity Since I’m wearing rubber gloves… uh..! So I’m no feeling electric shocks First, I’m going to “Koori jime” (Euthanize in ice water) this electric eel Using same cleaning method as regular eel and kill it In a deep pan, pour water
[Euthanize in ice water] Then I’m putting electric eel in ice water They generate electricity but I heard electric eel can feel the shock to themselves So that why the body twitches, I think See that? It’s generating electricity Even though I’m touching the eel, I don’t feel electric shocks so I think I’m safe So let’s do this Wow! It buzzed! Wait wait wait wait!! [Even while he panics, Kaneko is able to change the camera angle] I felt the buzz! I was able to feel electric shock through these rubber gloves Not a lot but tingled Like low level electric massager Alright here I go… There! Good! I finally got it in ice water Let’s wait until it stops moving Alright, so I left it in ice water for about 30 minutes but didn’t die So I sprinkled some salt to lower the temperature And the surface of the eel where salt touched turned white See the bottom fin too? Which you don’t see with regular eels New discovery! Finally it stopped moving So I’m going to chop the head off Once chopped, eel will not generate electricity So my plan is to chop the head off, Then cross-section cut Then butterfly those cuts And I’m going to make “Kabayaki” (grilled eel with sweet soy sauce base eel sauce) and “Shirayaki” (grilled eel without sauce) I’m going to make those 2 classic eel dishes today Itadakimasu Oh, it’s quiet now No electric shocks [Observation]
This is the face of an electric eel Face is closer to catfish rather than eel Inside the mouth What are these Inside the mouth is bumpy This is the inside This is a super rare shot Inside of an electric eel’s mouth Looks like coral reef Long and flabby bottom fin No dorsal fin Not even a single one That’s about it And looks like an eel from the top Alright, let’s start Chopping the head off
[Chop head off] It’s bleeding a lot…
[*I lowered the contrast so that it’s not too graphic] I need to bleed it out once chop the head off [Gutting]
I might have crushed gall bladder but… Not much organs inside Organs I’m going to bleed it out then Done bleeding it out So slimy I’m going to cross-section cut in about this thickness
[Cross-section cut] The feel of cutting it is pretty soft So slippery it’s sliding off from the board Crosse section looks like this
[Cross section] Interesting isn’t it? Very jelly-like Flesh is kinda like deep-sea fish? This area is fat That’s the fat and There’s the nerve and meat I’m guessing that’s the muscle And that’s the fat I heard electric eel contains a lot of fat to keep themselves safe from electric shocks So that’s fat And the meat I can get many cuts Cross-section cuts! This is an interesting shot… So let’s grab one and two middle cuts for today I would love to share these but… I don’t think I wanna share an electric eel with my neighbor. Lol Let’s give a cut to The Weird Fish Man! Oh yeah! Let’s take some so he can taste too! At the end of this video, The Weird Fish Man will be tasting it so please watch until the end And the smell is… It has a peculiar smell Not fishy, it smells like red bean ice cream Yeah, red beans Interesting Alright, let’s butterfly cut [Butterfly cut and remove spine]
I’m gonna chop this off Remove bottom fin and I’m guessing bones are in the middle So, cut along the bones Am I doing this right? As I thought, there’s the fat and the meat is near the bottom Spine is softer than I expected But not soft enough to eat So let’s take that out Spine is soft enough to cut easily with a knife But I think not soft enough to eat And a butterfly cut of electric eel is done Doing one more time First, remove bottom fin Then, this is where middle bones are Cut next to the bones
Knife will slide easily And butterfly open it When you reach to the meat, Cut around the spine And cut spine off I’m gonna cut it in half because it’s too big [Skewer]
Then skewer 3 skewers per piece is enough Should be enough to hold the meat 3 skewers for this piece too one, two.. Three Alright, let’s grill these Place electric eel skewers on the grill [Grilling]
I’m going to slowly grill these On the right is Kabayaki, and Shirayaki is on the left I’m going to coat Shirayaki with Sake To remove its smell These are smoking a lot Cooked! Lots of fat Cross section cut of fat looks like an adductor muscle of a clam Like muscle of a pen shell I think these are cooked through So let’s finish it off I’m going to coat Shirayaki with Mirin (cooking sake) Coat it with Mirin, sear a bit and finish grilling Coating this one with eel sauce Coat both sides Good I’m double coating this one with a lot of sauce Same on this side Alright, electric eel’s Shirayaki and Kabayaki are done! [DONE!] Alright, done! Itadakimasu!
Let’s eat! On the left is Kabayaki, on the right is Shirayaki Can’t wait to try! Trying Shirayaki first Peeling the skin and there’s the fat Trying meat in the middle Woah, what is this texture What is this puddingly?! feel like… But this part is pretty much fat Oil comes out when I press the meat Smells really good though! Itadakimasu! Oh! Not bad…but not delicious either… I don’t know why but it’s bit salty But no fishy smell Smooth fat, not greasy at all And the meat, that’s where I gotta try Very bony Well, Itadakimasu! Hmm? Actually, it tastes similar to regular eels Meat just melts and crumbles in my mouth Amount of meat you can eat is small but it’s pretty tasty Next, I’m gonna try Kabayaki I’m guessing this part is fat like the other one Let’s eat with the skin this time Here it is
Itadakimasu! Hm? What the… It tastes weird The fat is very much like deep-sea fish It’s more like water rather than fat This is not fat It’s not heavy at all I just ate a whole chunk of it and the fat melted in my mouth But it wasn’t greasy or heavy at all But it wasn’t delicious either Let’s try the meat
Itadakimasu! Yup, the meat is delicious Alright, so the drink I want to enjoy with electric eel’s Shirayaki and Kabayaki is this! Ready…? The Silver One! (Alcohol Free) I gotta drive and share with The Weird Fish Man so I wonder how he would react Here it is
70% beer, 30% foam Itadakimasu! Good! But not the best Alright, let me enjoy rest of my meal [Finished Eating!] Thanks for the meal! So today, I got a huge fresh electric eel And made Shirayaki and Kabayaki And I had a great experience Plus, I don’t think there are many video’s of people cleaning and eating an electric eel For the record, I was happy to make an electric eel cleaning video Plus, I got to taste it too I’m very satisfied and it was an experience for me It’s been a while I got this excited I’m gonna give some to The Weird Fish Man Here I am! Let’s go! There he is – Good morning. What’s up?
